Introduction

Data - Diet Change
Per Capita Production Indices for Selected Agricultural Products (1952 = 100)
Prod_3.gif (9700 bytes) This chart presents per capita output indices for major agricultural products. Since the underlying data are measured in kg, the indices provide a more realistic picture than price-based statistics.

One can see the production disaster of the "Great Leap Forward" (1959-1952) and the enormous increase in agricultural production since the economic reforms of 1978.

The largest increase in production was for fruits, aquatic products and meat. These production trends reflect the trends towards a more diverse, protein-rich diet in China.
