Source: State Land Administration, Statistical Information on the Land of China in 1995. Beijing, 1996. And equivalent reports for 1988 to 1994.
Between 1988 and 1995 China lost 1.72 million hectares (or 1.3 %) of its cultivated land. This estimate takes into account the underreporting of cultivated land in 1988. Large areas of cultivated land also got lost in the province of Inner Mongolia (more than 212 thousand hectares) and Sichuan (151 thousand hectares).
With over 360 thousand hectares the province of Shaanxi had the largest net-loss of cultivated land. Its size declined by almost 6.4 percent.
The largest relative net-loss of cultivated land, however, was reported from Shanghai, which lost almost 10 percent of its cultivated area. With more than 7 percent Beijing also had a significant net-loss of cultivated land.
The only significant net-increase of cultivated land was reported from Xinjiang (157 thousand hectares or 4.2 percent).
