Procedure
These tables were produced with the GIS system of IIASA's LUC-Project. Due to the
nature of this multi-layer GIS, it was possible to overlay various geo-biophysical data
sets with geo-referenced population data. We used population data from the Ministry of
Public Security for 1992 by county and city districts. These data were manually typed into
a GIS database from a printed data report (see source). By cross-checking prefecture- and
province-aggregates with corresponding population statistics from other sources
(such as the China Statistical Yearbook), we could confirm the consistency of our
county-level data and eliminate some obvious data errors. With the exception of a few
counties, for which no data were available, we had full coverage of China. This spatial
population data set for China was then used to calculate the above statistics. Please,
also see the sources and description for the precipitation
data. |
