This
chart gives an idea of how difficult it is to analyze China's urbanization prospects. It
shows China's agricultural and nonagricultural population by place of residence for the
country's eight main regions.
In the Plateau region, the agricultural population predominantly lives in the counties
(which are China's rural districts). However, in the Northeast about 56% of the agricultural
population lives in cities and towns. This somewhat strange situation also occurs in the nonagricultural
population. In the Northeast more than 80% of the nonagricultural population lives in
cities and towns. On the Plateau, however, only some 64% of the nonagricultural population
lives in cities or towns - but about 36% of the nonagricultural population lives
in (rural) counties.
It is evident that the agricultural versus nonagricultural classification of the
population does not necessarily reflect the people's urban or rural residence.
