Per capita income of urban and rural households in China, 1978 -
1997
This chart
partly explains the attraction of cities and towns for China's rural population. Whereas
average household income has risen significantly in rural areas, incomes in urban areas
have increased even more. The gap between urban and rural income has remained almost
unchanged. While the ratio of average per capita income between rural and urban households
was 133.6 to 343.4 (1 : 2.57) it only slightly declined to 2,090.1 to 5,160.3 (1 : 2.47).
